ClarkArts Presents: The Living Room Concert Including performances of
new student works, Plus a rare performance of Cornelius Cardew's Treatise
Worcester, Mass. - Clark University Music Professor Matthew Malsky is becoming known for bringing bizarre and interesting performances to Worcester. He does this once again with his annual Living Room Concert on Monday. May 1, 2006 at 8 p.m., in Fuller Music Center, Estabrook Hall at Clark University.
The Living Room Concert, started seven years ago by Malsky and some of his students, is named for the classic John Cage piece of the same title. The concert is an opportunity for Clark composition students to have their works publicly performed as well as take part in a performance of a classic piece from the contemporary music catalogue.
This year is no exception as Malsky along with other faculty, staff and students from Clark and Holy Cross will be taking on the ever complex and rarely performed Treatise by British composer, Cornelius Cardew (1936-1981). The piece is simply a graphic score; no notes, no bar lines, just a piece of graphic art draw by Cardew, a trained graphic designer as well as composer. Performers are asked to interpret the score as they deem fit, causing a cacophonous, yet dramatic musical experience for both the players and the listeners.
This concert is Malsky's second undertaking of the academic year, after last fall's highly successful Extensible Toy Piano Project.
Your chance to hear a performance of this classic work is free and open to the public.
