U.S. Rep. McGovern to lecture Oct. 30 at Clark on Darfur Genocide

Worcester, Mass. - The Strassler Family Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies will present "Stop the Darfur Genocide!" a lecture by U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern (D-MA), beginning at 7:30 p.m. Monday, October 30, in Tilton Hall, in the Higgins University Center.

Congressman McGovern has been an outspoken critic of the international community's lack of action against the genocide in Darfur. In April, Mr. McGovern organized a protest and was arrested, along with four House colleagues and five religious and student leaders, in front of the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, D.C. McGovern is a member of the House Sudan Caucus and co-chair of the Congressional House Hunger Caucus. The Genocide Intervention Network has praised McGovern's work on behalf of the Darfur victims.

Currently serving his fifth term in Congress, McGovern was first sworn in as U.S. Representative for Massachusetts' 3rd Congressional District in 1997. He was elected by his New England colleagues to the House Democratic Leadership team as Regional Whip. He is also the second-ranking Democrat on the powerful House Rules Committee, which sets the terms for debate and amendments on most legislation.

This lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact The Strassler Family Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, 508-793-8897.
