Clark University kicks off 2005-06 academic ‘new year’
WORCESTER, MA-Classes began today (Aug. 25) at Clark University. The academic new year brings a busy calendar of events and many changes on campus.
The current student body at Clark includes: 584 first-year students (new first year, transfer first year, and continuing first year); 500 second-year (includes transfers into second year); 497 third-years (includes transfers into third year), and 459 fourth-years for a total of 2040 undergraduates.
Here are some back-to-Clark highlights:
- Fall Convocation and Salute to Student Scholars will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31 in the Daniels Theater, Atwood Hall. Fall Convocation is the official opening of the 2005-2006 academic year. A short formal ceremony includes the awarding of university-wide awards (such as Outstanding Teacher, Jefferson Prize, etc.) and an address by dean of the college Doug Little, who will speak on "Over Here: Why We Need to Talk about Iraq." This will be followed by the Salute to Student Scholars and reception in Tilton Hall, Higgins University Center.
- Several updates have been made to the Higgins University Center, a hub of campus activity housing the main dining hall, mail stations, a student lounge with Internet stations, outdoor rooftop terrace, conference rooms, crafts center, galleries, copy shop and bulletins/poster stations. The dining hall has been renovated and features new serving stations and seating. The Grind, a popular pub-style lounge, is completely redecorated. The Bistro Café sports an outdoor patio and a new espresso station, run by Pura Vida, a Seattle-based coffee company that is 100 percent charitably owned, funneling all its resources to “benefit at-risk children and their families in coffee-growing countries.”
- A newly renovated Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science Building contains approximately 27,000 square feet of floor space devoted to research laboratories and undergraduate teaching laboratories as well as lecture and seminar rooms and department offices. State-of-the-art research labs and classrooms in new Lasry Biosciences Center are geared up for students choosing to study the sciences at Clark.
- Seven new faculty members have been welcomed this fall, coming to Clark from such institutions as the California Institute of Technology, University of Illinois, and Catholic University. Their fields include macroeconomics, environmental science and engineering, psychology, history, geography and literature.
- Many educational and entertaining events that are free and open to the public are slated for the fall semester. A wide spectrum of timely and interesting topics will be presented through such programs as Clark’s African American Intellectual Culture Series and President’s Lecture Series.
