The Clark University Jazz Workshop and Combo showcases the talents of some of Clark's best student musicians. Directed by Richard Falco, these groups perform throughout the year at concerts and events on and off the Clark campus. Focusing on repertoire that embraces both the traditions of classic jazz and the innovations of modern jazz, the Clark jazz ensembles celebrate the vitality of this unique art form.
Richard Falco, director, joined the music faculty of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1979 where he holds the position of Director of Jazz Studies. He also has served for a number of years on the jazz faculty of Clark University.
Ensembles under his direction have performed in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Russia, Romania, the Czech Republic, Austria, Egypt, Spain, Greece, Canada, Italy and the United States. He was interviewed by "A Tout Jazz" for National Public Radio of France regarding the state of jazz education in America, and has been invited to lecture and perform at several music schools while touring abroad.
Professor Falco was the founder and Artistic Director of the Jazz Worcester Music Festival, and a past president of the former Jazz Worcester Society. He is a frequent adjudicator and clinician for the Massachusetts Music Educators Association, the Rhode Island Music Educators Association, and is a Festival Host and adjudicator for the International Association of Jazz Educators. He is an active member of the New England Jazz Alliance. In 1989, he was the recipient of the Henry "Boots" Mussulli Jazz Educator of the Year award. Currently, he is the Music Director, Conductor and Narrator for the "Conversations in Jazz: Brown Bag for Kids", a production of Mechanics Hall, presented annually in Mechanics Hall.
Timothy Mason, poet, has been actively promoting poetry and folk music in greater Boston since the mid 1980's. A member of the first National Poetry Slam Team from Boston in 1991 and the first Worcester Team in 1993, he honed his performance style around the campfires of the fabled Kerrville Folk Festival giving the songwriters a run for their money.
His poetry is drawn from his diverse experiences and is written to be performed aloud. He has collaborated with musicians on a number of occasions, including recording the cassette single Saddam's Insane with prize-winning guitarist Geoff Bartley. Saddam's Insane aired on National Public Radio's HEAT show at the onset of the Gulf War.
Clark University is a private, co-educational liberal-arts research university with 2,000 undergraduate and 600 graduate students. Since its founding in 1887 as the first all-graduate school in New England, Clark has challenged convention with innovative programs such as the International Studies Stream, the Strassler Family Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the five-year BA/MA programs with the fifth year tuition-free for eligible students.
