Clark to host National History Day contest for state April 9
WORCESTER, MA - After competing in five regional districts, Massachusetts students will compete in the state finals of Massachusetts History Day at Clark University from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 9, in Tilton Hall, Higgins University Center, and in Jonas Clark Hall. The Awards Ceremony to announce winning entries in this competition will take place in the Daniels Theater in Atwood Hall at 3 p.m.
More than 190 students have registered for this event. They represent 41 public and private schools from across the Commonwealth. Divisions are junior (grades 6-8) and senior (grades 9-12). They have produced 112 entries in 14 categories (including historical papers, table-top exhibits, live performances, and documentaries) that will be judged by teams of teachers and history professionals. The top two entries in each category will go on to the contest at National History Day in Maryland in June.
National History Day is directed from offices at the University of Maryland at College Park and is currently celebrating 25 years as a national historical research program for students in grades 6 through 12. The Massachusetts Council for the Social Studies sponsors Massachusetts History Day, which has developed this program at the state level since 1982. The National theme for this year’s program is “Communications in History: The Key to Understanding.” Students from across the country have been encouraged to think about, research, and create topics and projects related to this theme. Questioning their understanding of these key terms-communication, history, and understanding-and then applying them to a person, moment, or event encourages students to discover their own investments in and contributions to history. Ultimately, it is the kind of challenge that may help them view history as a lens through which they can more fully understand their present and develop more informed approaches in the creation of their futures.
