Gustaf H. Carlson School of Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of the structure and properties of matter, usually inanimate matter. A focus on larger molecules and organisms leads into biochemistry, eventually molecular biology and then straight biology. A focus on smaller particles—atoms or the subatomic structures—begins to involve physics. The intermediate scale tends to be where the chemists do most of their work. We like to describe ourselves as the central science!

At the Gustaf H. Carlson School of Chemistry, faculty, grad students and undergraduates investigate together the properties of materials ranging from molecular structures and nanoparticles to DNA and high performance carbon fiber composites.
