Men's Highlights
2008
Highlights from the 2008 Clark University men’s rowing season includes a varsity four boat victory in their second regatta of the year. They outlasted Rutgers University in the two-boat race with a time of 7:19.1. However, the varsity four boat’s best time of the season came with a 7:09.43 fourth place finish at the New England Fours Championship, where they beat out UMass-Lowell and Brandeis University.
The Clark novice four was runner-up with a season-high time of 8:26.8 in a regatta hosted by WPI this spring.
2007
With a young crew on deck this season, the Clark University men’s rowing team made significant strokes throughout the year. Prior to the season, Russ Giacobbe, Andrew Gager, Horia Kraus, Josh Cohen and Mike Hardie participated in the C.R.A.S.H. B’s, the indoor rowing championships, in Boston.
The men’s novice four began its career with a gold medal at the New Hampshire Championships this fall. In the seven-boat event, the team of Elena DeStefano, Nicky Boyne, Wes Dunkel, Andrew Gager, and Mike Haride took first place in a time of 17:02. Closing out the fall session at the Head of the Charles, Coxswain Heather Larson, Russell Giacobbe, Tom Valleau, Andrew Gager, and Peter Dunkel had a strong showing in the men's club four. The crew placed 28th of 34 (20:27).
In the first regatta of the season, Clark had its best showing in the second men’s varsity race, where they were runner-up to Connecticut College with a time of 8:00.8. The men’s varsity four raced to a fifth place finish (7:49.2) and later found themselves ranked 17th out of 23 in the New England Rowing Coaches Poll. The regionally ranking was warranted when the four outlasted Wentworth Institute of Technology with a time of 7:36.3 in a two-boat race the following week. Coxswain Leah Block, Russell Giacobbe, Andrew Gager, Josh Cohen, and Tom Valleau manned the winning boat
Concluding the season at the New England Championships, the men’s four placed fourth in their heat (7:22.0).
2005
Although most of the 2005 spring season was spent battling the New England
weather, the men’s varsity four boat of coxswain Mike Agnelli ’05,
Brian Godard ’05, John Matulis ’05, Julius Lagliva ’05 (heats),
Tom Valleau ’07, and Stefan Spassov ‘08 (petites) finished third
in their first heat at the New England Championships with a time of 7:27.29.
They went on to finish 12th of 17 boats in a time of 7:29.57 beating Connecticut
College, Franklin Pierce, Williams, Mass Maritime, and Brandeis.
2004
In 2004, head men’s crew coach Erick Thiemke (1st year) directed the
crew program to impressive finishes at both the New Englan Championships and
the ECAC National Championships. The men’s varsity four boat which consisted
of junior coxswain Michael Agnelli and rowers: junior Brian Godard, junior Anthony
Fanelli, junior John Matulis and junior Sam Licciardo placed fifth out of six
boats in the grand final at the New England Championships with a time of 8:57.34.
The Cougars finished second out of six in their heat to qualify for the final.
At the ECAC National Championships the Cougars placed fourth out of six boats
in the petite race and 10th out of 15 overall. In addition, the men claimed
the Worcester City Championship varsity four title
2003
Despite the long winter and an icy lake the 2003 men’s crew team competed
this spring under first-year head coach Sam Stratton ‘01. Once the ice
melted the Cougars finished fourth out of eight boats in a varsity four race
against Franklin Pierce, Assumption, Fairfield and Bowdoin. Highlighting the
year was the varsity four first place finish against WPI and Connecticut College
and after the varsity four boat finished second in their heat at the New England’s
they advanced to the finals and finished sixth overall. Members of the varsity
boat were sophomore coxswain Michael Agnelli and sophomore rowers Brian Godard,
Anthony Fanelli, John Matulis and Sam Licciardo.
2002
The men's varsity four boat placed second at the New Hampshire Championships
in the fall of 2002. The boat finished with a 17:29.94 time
The men's novice eight recorded the fastest time in recent Clark crew history
with a 6:53.22 time in the spring of 2002. At the NE Fours Championship the
men's novice four finished 5th out of 18 boats.
1996
In 1996 the rowing teams dedicated a new varsity eight shell, which was purchased
with money from the squad's fundraising efforts. Christened Miss Scarlet 1995,
the boat was named for Clark's main athletic color with the year that the majority
of the fundraising took place.
During the fall of 1996 the men's varsity four finished seventh of 24 (a 13
place improvement over the previous year) at the Head of the Connecticut.
1994
Clark's 1994 men's varsity four boat won its race at the Worcester City Championships.
1991
Clark has been successful at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in
Boston. In the fall of 1991, the men's varsity four was sixth of 45 boats.
1989
In 1989 the men finished 11th of 38 entries.
