Clark University Announces 2002-2003 Athletic Department Award Winners
WORCESTER, MA…Athletic department award winners and senior athletes were honored at the
Clark University Athletic Awards Program, Monday, April 28th. A scholar athlete reception
was held before the awards program honoring ninety-nine athletes who had earned a 3.5 GPA
for the 2002 spring semester and/or 2002 fall semester and/or have a 3.5 cumulative GPA.
The following capsules are profiles of the major award recipients.
Russ Granger Award
The Russ Granger Award for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a male athlete was awarded to senior Nathan Lavery (Shelburne, VT/Champlain Valley Union HS), a four-year soccer player. The captain and defender started in all 17 games this year and was a key member of this year’s defense. An economics/government major, Lavery has maintained a 3.7 grade-point average over the past four years. He is a two-time member of the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team and has received Clark scholar-athlete honors all four years.
Alice Higgins Award
The recipient of the Alice Higgins Award for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a female athlete was senior basketball player Rachael Turkington (Holland, MA/Tantasqua Regional HS). A three-year starter and captain her senior year, Turkington had an outstanding career .. She led the team in scoring with 17.4 points per game and finished the year leading the nation in three-point field goals made per game (4.0). She made 101 three-pointers in 25 games. Turkington was named to the Verizon Academic All-America District I First Team this year and the second team in 2002. In addition, she was named to the NEWBA All-New England Third Team, the ECAC New England Honorable Mention Team and the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team in 2003. In just three years Turkington scored 961 career points. She has received NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honors and Clark Scholar-Athlete honors three times as a psychology major and has achieved a 3.8 grade-point average.
Fred Hebert Trophy
The Fred Hebert Trophy is awarded to the outstanding senior male athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark Athletics. This year’s winner was senior men’s basketball captain Sean Fleming (Smithfield, RI/Worcester Academy). Fleming finished his career establishing himself as one of Clark’s best basketball players and was named to the 2003 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-America Second Team, placing him among the top 16 Division III college basketball players in the country. The NEWMAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, Fleming led the team with 18.6 points a game. He added 5.2 rebounds per game and 2.9 assists per game. He earned all-conference honors for the third consecutive season and was among conference leaders in eight statistical categories including first in scoring, three-point field goal percentage and free-throw percentage. Selected to the ECAC New England All-Star first team, the D3hoops.com All-America fourth team and the D3.hoops.com All-Northeast Regional first team, Fleming finished the season ranked third nationally in free-throw percentage (91.2). In addition, he played in the NEBCA All-Star game as a member of the south team and he received the NEBCA Bob Cousy award, which is awarded annually to the most outstanding Division I, II or III New England men’s basketball player under six feet. While at Clark, Fleming has led the Cougars to 20 or more wins three consecutive seasons including a 21-7 overall record in 2002-03. The Cougars have reached the post-season four consecutive years including three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament and back-to-back appearances in the Elite Eight in 2001 and 2002 during his impressive career. In addition, Fleming has helped lead the Cougars to an outstanding 86-27 overall record over the past four seasons, a 43-9 conference record and a 42-7 home record. He received ECAC Division III All-Star second team honors as a sophomore and junior and D3hoops.com All-Northeast Region Second Team honors his junior year to add to his numerous postseason awards he received his senior year. He is currently ranked fifth on Clark’s all-time scoring list with 1,561 points. Fleming is a management major and has achieved a 3.18 grade-point average.
M. Hazel Hughes Trophy
The M. Hazel Hughes Trophy is awarded to the outstanding senior female athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark Athletics. This year’s recipient was senior field hockey/softball player Julie Mazeika (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial HS). A four-year member of both teams and captain for both sports in her senior year, Mazeika has established herself as a solid contributor to both programs. Mazeika was named to the NFHCA All-America Third Team, NFHCA Regional All-America First Team, NFHCA Division III North/South Senior All-Star team and NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team in 2002. She earned NFHCA Regional All-America First Team and NEWMAC All-Conference honors in 2001. In addition, she has received NFHCA Div. III National Academic Squad honors and Clark Scholar-Athlete honors the last two years. She finished her field hockey career with 41 goals, 14 assists and 96 points, which ranks her sixth on Clark’s all-time scoring list. Mazeika has helped lead Clark to three straight appearances in the field hockey ECAC Tournament including trips to the finals in 2000 and 2002. During her four-year career Clark has compiled an impressive 59-25 overall record including a record breaking 19-4 season in her senior year. A three-year starter of the softball team, Mazeika missed her senior season due to an ACL injury. She compiled a .293 batting average while helping Clark reach the ECAC Tournament the last three years. Mazeika, a biology major, has achieved a 3.4 grade-point average and received a fellowship to conduct biology research at Clark last summer. She was awarded a internship from the National Institute of Health to conduct cancer research this summer.
Merit Award
Each year the Athletic Department presents Merit Awards to seniors who have had a significant impact on their sport. This year’s recipient was Jesse Egan ’03 (Pepperell, MA/Academy of Notre Dame). A three-year goalkeeper and starter her junior and senior year, Egan had never played field hockey before transferring to Clark. She finished the year ranked first in the nation in goal against average (.56) and received NFHCA Division III All-America first team honors. In addition, she earned NFHCA Division III New England East Region All-America first team honors and NEWMAC All-Conference First Team honors this year. In 23 games in 2002, she recorded a school record 15 shutouts and her .892 save percentage ranked her seventh in the country. This fall she helped lead Clark to a school record 19 wins and an appearance in the NEWMAC Championship and the ECAC New England Tournament finals. In 44 career games, she compiled a .64 goals against average, recorded 25.5 shutouts and made 245 saves. Egan, who appeared in the Sports Illustrated Faces In The Crowd column on April 7, 2003, was also named to the NFHCA All-Regional first team in 2001.
Senior Class Award
The Senior Class Award is given annually to the senior athlete who best exemplifies class, spirit and integrity in his or her athletic endeavors. This year’s winner was Jamie Clark ‘03 (Middletown, CT/Middletown HS). Clark, is a four-year member and captain of the men’s swimming team and participated on the men’s lacrosse team this year. He was very involved with his senior class and he is very visible in the athletic department and at athletic events.
Richie Fairbanks Service Award
The Richie Fairbanks Service Award, which is given to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the athletic program, was awarded to junior Scott Zoback (Tolland, CT/Tolland CT). Zoback, the men’s lacrosse team manager, has been extremely active in the athletic department over the past year. He is a member of the Athletic Board, has volunteered his time as a photographer for the department and worked countless hours for the men’s lacrosse team. As editor of the school’s newspaper, the Scarlet, he has played a key role in increasing the visibility of the athletic programs at Clark both in the newspaper and around campus.
