Clark University Announces 2001-02 Athletic Department Award Winners

WORCESTER, MA…Athletic department award winners and senior athletes were honored at the Clark University Athletic Awards Program, Monday, April 29th. A scholar athlete reception was held before the awards program, which honored 76 student athletes. Athletes must have earned a 3.5 GPA for the 2001 Spring semester and/or 2001 Fall semester and/or have 3.5 cumulative GPA. The following capsules are profiles of the major award recipients.

Russ Granger Award
The Russ Granger Award for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a male athlete was awarded to junior Brock Tibert (Leominster, MA/Leominster HS), a three-year baseball player. The second baseman played in all 32 games this year and batted .327. In three years he has played in 92 games and has an impressive .938 fielding percentage and has turned 23 double plays. An economics major, Tibert has maintained a 3.48 grade-point average over the past three years.

Alice Higgins Award
The recipient of the Alice Higgins Award for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a female athlete was junior field hockey/softball player Julie Mazeika (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial HS). A three-year member of both teams, Mazeika has established herself as a solid contributor to both programs. Mazeika was named to the NFHCA Regional All-America First Team and NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team this year. In addition, she has received NFHCA Div. III National Academic Squad honors this year and Clark Scholar-Athlete honors the last two years. Mazeika, a biology major, has achieved a 3.3 grade-point average and received a fellowship to conduct biology research this summer.

Fred Hebert Trophy
The Fred Hebert Trophy is awarded to the outstanding senior male athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark Athletics. This year’s winner was senior cross country captain Jamie Salo (Sterling, MA/Home Schooled). Salo has been a valuable member of the team and the entire athletic department. He designed and continues to help maintain the athletic web site and has been a two-year member of the Athletic Board and Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and has been a major part of the planning for the new facilities/field project at Clark. He is a three-time member of the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team and has received Clark scholar-athlete honors three times. Salo, a member of the Gryphon & Pleiades and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies, is an Environmental Science & Policy major and has achieved a 3.70 grade-point average.

M. Hazel Hughes Trophy
The M. Hazel Hughes Trophy is awarded to the outstanding senior female athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark Athletics. This year’s recipients were seniors Lynne Casey (Leominster, MA/Leominster HS) and Aimee Lee (Worcester, MA/Holy Name HS). Casey is a four-year starter on the field hockey team and a four-year starter and team captain on the softball team. She has had an impressive career in two of Clark’s most successful programs. The forward on the field hockey team the past four seasons, she finished her career as Clark’s second leading scorer with 120 points. In 76 games she scored 42 goals and ended her career with a record 36 assists. Casey led Clark to an impressive 52-28 record and three ECAC Tournament appearances including a trip to the 2000 ECAC finals. She received NFHCA Division III All-America First Team honors her senior year and is only the second Clark field hockey player to receive such honors. In addition, she was named to the NFHCA Div. III New England Regional All-America First Team three times, the NFHCA Div. III New England Regional All-America Second Team her first year, and NEWMAC All-Conference Team three times. Casey was also named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and participated in the NFHCA Division III North/South Senior All-Star game. She has also been a major contributor to a very successful softball program. A four-year starter, she has played first base, second base, shortstop and catcher in her four years. She holds the season stolen bases record (15) and is tied for season runs scored (49). A solid hitter, Casey surpassed the 200-hit mark this year and is second all-time with 205 hits. In 125 games she has a .402 career batting average. She was named to the NFCA Regional All-America Third Team in 2001, the NFCA Regional All-America First team in 1999 and 2000, the NEISCA All-New England Second Team in 2000, the ECAC All-New England Second Team in 1999, and the NEWMAC All-Conference team in 2000. Along, with Lee she has helped Clark compile an impressive 106-41 record (as of 4/29/02) and lead Clark to three post season appearances. They both were members of the 1999 squad that finished third in the NCAA Tournament New England Regional and the 2000 team that reached the ECAC Tournament Finals. Lee has established herself as one of the best softball players in Clark history over a four-year period. She is the all-time hit leader with 224 hits and has a .438 career batting average. On the mound she has compiled a 60-25 record with a 1.26 earned run average while striking out an impressive 439 batters. Lee holds season records in slugging percentage (.827), season hits (66), season RBIs (59), season doubles (15), season home runs (9), total bases (108), and earned run average (1.10). She will also undoubtedly rewrite the career records at the conclusion of the season. Lee has earned numerous awards along the way, including NCAA Regional All-Tournament team in 1999, NFCA Regional All-America First Team in 1999 and 2000, NFCA Regional All-America Second Team in 2001, NEISCA All-New England First Team in 1999 and 2000, and ECAC All-New England First Team in 1999. In addition, she was named NEWMAC Player of the Year in 2001, NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in 1999, and was selected to the NEWMAC All-Conference Team the last three years. She also participated in the NEISCA New England All-Star game twice.

Merit Award
Each year the Athletic Department presents Merit Awards to seniors who have had a significant impact on their sport. This year’s first recipient was Katie Brothers ’02 (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Reg. HS). A four-year starter and tri-captain on the women’s soccer team this year, Brothers is a four-time member of the NSCAA All-America New England Team, NEWISA All-New England Team, and NEWMAC All-Conference Team. She received NEWMAC Rookie of the Year honors in her first year and was selected to the NEWISA Senior Bowl team in her senior year. Brothers finished her career as Clark’s all-time leading scorer with 105 points. She finished with 33 goals and a career leading 39 assists. Brothers, a member of the 1998 team that went undefeated in the regular season and made Clark’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament, holds the record for season assists with 16. The second Merit Award winner was men’s lacrosse player Jeff Cohen ’02 (West Hartford, CT/Hall HS). Cohen, a four-year starter and two-year captain, finished his career with 58 goals, 57 assists, and 115 points. He received NEWMAC All-Conference and Pilgrim League All-Conference honors in his junior year. Cohen was selected to the Pilgrim League Southeast All-Star Game in his sophomore year. The third Merit Award winner was baseball player John Galvin ’02 (Worcester, MA/St. Peter Marian). Galvin, a four-year starter and two-year captain, finished his career setting records in nearly all of the offensive categories. Galvin holds season records in triples (6), runs scored (42), walks (28), and stolen bases (32). He holds career records in stolen bases (80), triples (10), homeruns (12), hits (144), and at-bats (427). He received NEWMAC All-Conference and ECAC New England All-Star Honorable Mention in his junior year. In his senior year, he led the team with a .384 batting average and has a .343 career batting average in 125 games played. The final Merit Award recipient was softball captain Holly Scavone ’02 (Worcester, MA/Holy Name HS). Scavone, a three-year player, suffered a knee-injury her junior year. She has compiled an impressive 44-15 overall record on the mound with a 1.65 earned run average while striking out 311 batters. A versatile player when not on the mound she starts at second base and has a career batting average of .385 and has collected 130 hits in only three years. Scavone was a member of the 1999 squad that finished third in the NCAA Tournament New England Regional and a member of the 2000 team that reached the ECAC Tournament finals. She has received numerous individual honors including NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team honors in her first year, NFCA Regional All-America Second Team in 1999 and 2000, NEISCA All-New England Second Team in 2000, and NEWMAC All-Conference in 1999 and 2000. In addition, she played in the NEISCA New England All-Star game in her first-year. Scavone was also a member of the soccer team for two years.

Senior Class Award
The Senior Class Award is given annually to the senior athlete who best exemplifies class, spirit and integrity in his or her athletic endeavors. This year’s winners are Katie Calabrese ’02 (Bar Harbor, ME/New Medford HS) and Brie Cersosimo (W. Hartford, CT/Conard HS). Calabrese, a four-year member of the women’s swimming team and a captain this season was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference team and was the 100 breaststroke champion in 1999. She holds school records in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events. A member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and very involved with her senior class, she is very visible in the athletic department and at athletic events. Cersosimo, a four-year member of the women’s soccer team and a captain this season was a member of the 1998 team that compiled an undefeated regular season record and made the program’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament. Playing most of her career as a defensive player she scored three goals and had five assists in 58 games. A two-year member of the Athletic Board and the SAAC, she has been a major part of the planning for the new facilities/field project at Clark. She is a major presence at all athletic events and her enthusiasm is infectious.
