Hazel Hughes recipient at the 2007-08 Athletic Awards program held at the Higgins University Center, Tilton Hall on Tuesday night. Both awards are given annually to the male and female athlete who has made a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program and whose dedication and performance have enriched the tradition of Clark Athletics.
In addition, D.J. Brinn '08 and Sarah Brooks '08 were presented with the Russ Granger award and the Alice Higgins honor, respectively, while Shyamal Asher received the athletic department's first-ever Senior Scholar Athlete award. The Senior Class Award, given annually to the senior athlete who best exemplifies class, spirit and integrity in his or her athletic endeavor, was presented to Sarah Hunsucker (women's volleyball), Dan Rosenak (men's lacrosse) and Marc Labbe (men's soccer) this year.
Emily Zoback '08, who served two terms on the athletic board and sang the national anthem at home athletic events, was presented with the Richard Fairbanks Service Award for outstanding contribution to the athletic program.
A four-year starter for the men's soccer team, Blum capped his career last fall by becoming Clark's all-time points leader (38 goals, 11 assists, 87 points). The senior striker from Irvington, N.Y. was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Al-America second team as a sophomore after setting a new school record in season goals (23) and points (50). A two-time NEWMAC All-Conference selection, Blum helped Clark to a national top-20 ranking in 2006 and an impressive 42-21-10 record during his four-year career. Blum, a psychology major, earned scholar athlete honors senior year.
Warren garnered the Hazel Hughes award by excelling on the softball field. The Upland, Cali., native had an exceptional 2007 season, earning the NCAA Division III RBI Championship, Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and New England Intercollegiate Softball Association (NEISA)All-New England first-team, and ECAC All-New England second team honors. She also earned the program's first-ever NFCA Player of the Week. Additionally, Warren, a shortstop, was a NEWMAC first-team All-Star her junior and senior year. She established Clark single season records in homeruns (12), total bases (113) and slugging percentage (.934) and concluded her career as the second all-time leader in career homeruns (22) and career RBI (117) and fifth all-time in hits (160). Warren is a two-time scholar athlete majoring in sociology.
Brinn was named the Granger Award recipient for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a male athlete. A management major, Brinn, originally from Madison, Conn., competed for the men's basketball program all four years. A four-year scholar-athlete and two-time NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honoree, Brinn captained the team as a senior. A pure shooter and three-point threat, Brinn helped the team tie a school record in three-pointers made with 18 in a win versus Ramapo College (N.J.) this winter. His contribution off the court was just as remarkable as he was a four-year participant in the men's basketball reading program at Woodland Academy (formerly The All School) and a Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Executive Board Vice President for the past two years. Brinn will return to Clark in the fall for the fifth year MBA program.
Brooks was recognized with the Higgins Award for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a female athlete. A double-major in biology and studio art, Brooks was a four-year member of the womens rowing team. The three-year captain from Gloucester, Mass., was a four-year scholar athlete and Dean's list member, as well as a three-time NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honoree. Additionally, Brooks was a member of the Varsity Four boat that placed second in the New England Championships sophomore season and earned All-Conference honors freshman to senior year. Brooks has been accepted into the medical illustration program at the Medical College of Georgia.
Asher was awarded with the athletic department's first-ever Senior Scholar Athlete award, created to recognize the senior athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average over four years or one who will have completed their undergraduate requirements in three years. A senior captain of the men's swimming and diving team, Asher, from Mombassa, Kenya, completed his degree in biochemistry and molecular biology in three years with a 4.11 grade point average. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Gryphon and Pleides, a three-year recipient of both NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honors and the Scholar-Athlete award, as well as president of the International Students Association, where he organized the largest student-run event of the year - the International Gala. Asher will attend medical school at Brown University next fall.

BLUM CAPS CAREER WITH GOLD MEDAL AND SENIOR ALL-STAR GAME
David Blum knows a thing or two about playing with people other than his Clark University men’s soccer teammates. The senior forward from Irvington, N.Y., competed for the Maccabi USA team in Buenos Aires, Argentina during winter break and represented the Cougars in the 2008 New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) Senior All-Star game held at Clark’s Granger Field last Saturday. Blum was one of five New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) players to be selected to play on the Division III team.
While the NEISL All-Star game featured regional players from Division I, II, and III, many of whom Blum has played against in the past, the Maccabian squad was made up of players from different age groups (18-35) and from all over the country. However, that didn’t stop the team from winning USA’s first gold medal in an international competition.
“There have been a lot of memorable moments in my career,” said Clark’s all-time points leader with 38 goals, 11 assists for 87 points. “But, to stand on the podium and be a part of the first US team to receive the gold medal, ahead of powerhouse soccer teams like Argentina and Brazil, was probably the best experience.”
The road to the championship did not come easy. The team, which was assembled after a couple of tryouts, had a limited amount of time to develop their on- and off- the field chemistry. The newly formed squad met in Miami for a three-day training session, where they engaged in two-a-days to learn each other’s strengths on the field.
With six practices and a scrimmage behind them, the crew departed on their 10-hour journey to Buenos Aires. Upon their arrival, the Maccabi team had to face yet another obstacle – the heat.
“The weather was one of the biggest challenges,” Blum said. “We were playing in 102 degree heat and health was a major concern. We knew in order to go far in the tournament, everyone had to be prepared to play in the heat and stay healthy.”
The temperature proved not to be a factor as Blum and company posted its first win of the tourney, a 4-0 shutout, over Columbia. Blum, who received this year’s most outstanding male athlete award, the Fred Hebert trophy, was credited with an assist in the victory. However, celebrations were short-lived. The U.S. club fell to Argentina, 3-0, in the next round. In danger of elimination, the team needed a victory to ensure a spot in the final series. Up for the challenge, the Maccabian team outlasted Chile, 5-0, under the scorching 103 degree heat. Clark’s two-time All-NEWMAC forward recorded another assist to contribute in the win.
Tensions were high in the semifinal round, where the USA men’s open soccer team and Mexico played to a 2-2 double overtime tie.
However, the Maccabian squad advanced to the gold medal game for just the second time in Maccabi USA history with a 4-2 penalty kick advantage.
This would set up a rematch of the team’s only loss in the tournament – a title game face-off against Argentina.
“We only had one day’s rest before the gold medal game,” Blum said. “Although the schedule had taken a huge physical toll on all of the players, it all disappeared once the opening whistle blew for the championship.”
Up 1-0 at halftime, Blum sensed victory was within reach, but time began to drag in the second half.
“Would this game ever end?” he asked.
No sooner did he utter those words, the Maccabian team struck again to go up 2-0 with just 15 minutes left to play. That goal would put the game away and send team USA to the podium for its first gold medal in international competition.
“The feeling of winning could not be explained in words,” said the NEISL All-Star. “It was the greatest achievement I have ever been apart of in my soccer career.”
So as the clock ticked on his collegiate playing days, Blum took to the field one more time last Saturday. Although the experience won’t compare to the Maccabian Gold, competing with players all over New England summed up the effect soccer had on his life.
“To meet all of these great players outside of Clark, is one of the best things about soccer,” he said. “It’s so international and you can meet so many different people that it really helps your career in soccer and in life.”
