CLARK BASKETBALL TEAMS OPEN SEASON THIS WEEKEND
Clark University women’s and men’s basketball teams will tip-off their respective 2007-08 seasons this weekend in tournaments.
The Clark women’s season gets underway with the 26th annual Worcester City Tip-Off Tournament on Friday. The Cougars will face defending champion Worcester State College at 5 p.m. WPI will take on Nichols College in the other first-round game at 7 p.m. The consolation and championship games are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
Winners of 10 of the last 11 titles, Clark hopes to reclaim the championship at home this weekend. “Through the years, we’ve been able to be successful in the tournament,” said head coach Pat Glispin. “But there is terrific parity amongst the city schools. Any of the four teams could win it.”
Last year’s 12-13 (8-5 NEWMAC) team will be led by sophomore center Jillian Camilleri (Lancaster, Mass.) and junior Sarah Roderigue (Oakland, Me.), a conference all-star forward, sophomore guard Sara Hagstrom (Yarmouth, Me.) and graduate student Jess Lamothe (Westboro, Mass.), also a guard.
“In addition to Jess, who has significantly more experience than others, we’ve got two juniors (Roderigue and Hagstrom) and a sophomore (Camilleri) in really major roles this year,” Glispin said. “Those four have got to be the backbone of the team.”
Senior forward Katelyn Petty (Worcester, Mass.) will also be a key contributor. Top newcomers include Ariel Feinstein (Naples, Fla.), Hannah Lacaire (East Brookfield, Mass.), and Chloe Carden (Montclair, N.J.).
Coming off a 14-13 campaign, Worcester State advanced to the semifinals of last year’s Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) tournament.
The Cougar men will travel to the Roger Williams Tournament in Bristol, R.I. this weekend. On Friday, Clark will face Suffolk University at 8 p.m., while the host school will take on Castleton State College in a 6 p.m. tilt.
While the Cougars are young, they have a solid nucleus of players returning from last year’s 11-14 (5-6 NEWMAC) squad. Leading the list of returnees are junior forward Peter Normandin (Westminster, Mass.) and sophomore forward Mark Alexander (Providence, R.I.), a NEWMAC second-team selection. Senior guards D.J. Brinn (Madison, Conn.) and Pat Ochoa (Springfield, Mass.) and senior forward Pat Landers (Worcester, Mass.) should also make an impact.
“We only have eight players returning from last year’s team,” said coach Paul W. Phillips. “So we are still young and new. If we come out with a split this weekend, we will be right on schedule.”
Suffolk returns to the court after a 9-18 season.
