DOUBLES TOURNAMENT RECAP

The results are in! Stephen Albano ’07 and Nikola Milinkovic ’06 ousted President Bassett and teammate Emily Slack ’07 to capture the first annual women’s tennis doubles tournament played last Saturday at Corash Tennis Courts.

“The event went wonderfully,” said senior captain Kristen Domurad ‘08, the event’s principal organizer. “We had 12 teams and roughly 20 spectators throughout the day.”

Although President Basset and Slack fell at the end, Domurad declares, “They didn’t go down without a fight!” . Additionally, the women’s tennis team raised $82 for the Light the Night walk - a campaign for leukemia and lymphoma cancer patients and families – that they will participate in on Oct. 21 at Assumption College.

Other winners included Alex Sodi ’10 and David Sodi ’10, who took second place, and third place participants, Jim Paradise ’08 and Jon Janerelli ’08.

MEN’S SOCCER – TIED UP

You win some; you lose some. Lately, the Clark University men’s soccer team has made its mark in the tie column.

The Cougars, who have not posted more than two ties in a season since the 1986-87 campaign (13-3-4), have battled to three straight double-overtime draws in its first five games of the season. The squad posted a pair of 1-1 (2OT) stalemates against Johnson and Wales University and Brandeis University, respectively, and played to a double-overtime scoreless tie against MIT, the only unbeaten team in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), last Saturday. Although the squad stands at 1-1-3, head coach David Kulik believes they have found the right approach to OT.

“Obviously, overtime has a heightened sense of anxiety because everyone knows that the game could end at any kick,” said eighth-year coach. “. But our defense has been stingy in giving up chances and we have created the better of the opportunities to score.”

Outshooting their last three opponents, 44-29, the Cougars are just a confident goal score away from having a solid record. “We were the dominate team in a couple of those games, but that’s the nature of soccer,” he said. “Hopefully, these experiences are going to pay off for us in the long run.”

Although the Cougars have not cracked the win column in three bouts, sophomore goalkeeper Peter Wise and senior forward Marc Labbe’s contribution has not gone unnoticed. After both players sat out last season, Wise has come on to make a combined 13 saves, including several key stops, to preserve the stalemates and Labbe, tied for the team’s top scorer (3-0-6), scored the equalizer in the 1-1 tie against Brandeis.

As Clark gears up to host Lasell College tonight (6 p.m.), is another tie in the forecast?

“Lasell certainly won’t come here and give us anything easy,” Kulik said. “But, if we play the quality of soccer that we’ve been playing in most recent games, we should find a way to get a win.”

The game will be played at Granger Field. Live stats can be found at http://www.clarku.edu/athletics/livestats.cfm
