Clark named "Hottest School for Student Research" in new Kaplan/Newsweek Guide
Clark University has been recognized by the 2006 Kaplan/Newsweek Guide as one of "America's 25 Hot Schools." Clark has earned the designation "Hottest for Student Research."
According to Jay Mathews, Newsweek contributor and Washington Post reporter who authored the "hottest colleges" article, all of this year's "Hot Schools" are "creating buzz among students, a broad array of educators and admissions experts," and each "is effectively preparing students for the complex world."
"I have a long list of high school guidance counselors and teachers whom I consult whenever I want to know which colleges are delivering the most value to students," said Mathews. "They tell me that Clark University has become one of the places most often mentioned by high school graduates who come back to visit their old counselors and say, 'that college you sent me to is terrific, just like you said.'"
The 264-page publication is available on newsstands and can also be ordered on Kaplan's Web site (www.kaptest.com/store/) or by calling toll-free 800-KAP-ITEM. Read more about this news on the Clark Web site.
New academic year off to a great start
Classes began on Aug. 25. The current student body at Clark includes: 584 first-year students (new first-year, transfer first-year, and continuing first-year); 500 sophomores (includes transfers into second year); 497 juniors (includes transfers into third year), and 459 seniors for a total of 2040 undergraduates. Here are some back-to-Clark highlights:
Fall Convocation and Salute to Student Scholars was held on Aug. 31 in the Daniels Theater, Atwood Hall. A short formal ceremony included the awarding of Universitywide awards (such as Outstanding Teacher, Jefferson Prize, etc.) and an address by Dean of the College Doug Little, who spoke on "Over Here: Why We Need to Talk about Iraq." The war in Iraq will be the theme for a series of lectures and panel discussions throughout the year designed to educate the Clark community about all of the issues involved in the war. The formal ceremony was followed by the Salute to Student Scholars and reception in Tilton Hall, Higgins University Center.
Several updates have been made to the Higgins University Center. The dining hall has been renovated and features new serving stations and seating. The Grind is completely redecorated. The Bistro Café sports an outdoor patio and a new espresso station, run by Pura Vida, a Seattle-based coffee company that is 100 percent charitably owned, funneling all its resources to "benefit at-risk children and their families in coffee-growing countries."
A newly renovated Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science Building (formerly known as the biophysics building) contains approximately 27,000 square feet of floor space devoted to research laboratories and undergraduate teaching laboratories as well as lecture and seminar rooms and department offices. Students and faculty are also enjoying the state-of-the-art research labs and classrooms in the new Lasry Center for Bioscience.
Seven new faculty members have been welcomed this fall, coming to Clark from such institutions as the California Institute of Technology, University of Illinois, and Catholic University. Their fields include macroeconomics, environmental science and engineering, psychology, history, geography and literature.
