Clark celebrates 102nd Commencement
Commencement 2007 will take place on the Campus Green on Sunday, May 20. Can't make it to campus that day? No problem! Alumni can view a live Webcast of the ceremonies by logging on to www.clarku.edu/commencement and clicking "Visit the 2007 Commencement Webcast." Ceremonies begin at 1:30 p.m. EST. The Webcast will remain on the Web site following Commencement.
During the ceremonies, the University will award four honorary degrees. Each commencement, Clark recognizes distinguished members of the country—both alumni and nonalumni—by awarding them honorary degrees from the institution. Past recipients have included world-class politicians, artists, scientists, journalists and business experts, each a leader in his or her field.
This year's Honorary Degree Recipients are:
- Commencement speaker Blenda J. Wilson, professor and first president of the Nellie Mae Education Foundation
- Peter Piot, undersecretary general of the United Nations and executive director of UNAIDS
- Hervey Ross x'50, civic leader
- Lee S. Shulman, president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching
Read more about the honorary degree recipients.
Course Road Map: Islands in the Stream
Spanish professor Maria Acosta Cruz, who grew up in Puerto Rico, co-teaches the course “Islands in the Stream” with French professor Odile Ferly, who is from Guadeloupe in the French Antilles. Together, they draw on their research as Caribbeanists and their personal experiences growing up in the region to help Clark students see the Caribbean as an interconnected region rather than a set of separate islands. Their pan-Caribbean approach allows students to understand the islands as part of a region that reflects processes such as globalization, migratory patterns, cultural trends and diversity.
Experience Islands in the Stream through transcripts and video of interviews with professors Ferly and Acosta Cruz, as well as Alex Lefter '08 (Spanish and international development major), Karleen Porcena '09 (Spanish and comparative politics major) and Hannah Caruso '09 (Spanish and anthropology major).
Active Learning and Research
Historian Debórah Dwork and her students use a variety of sources—including government and philanthropic agency archives, newspapers, letters, memoirs and interviews—to understand the causes and impacts of the Holocaust and other genocides of the 20th century. Learn more about Dwork's research, her and colleague Robert van Pelt's important contribution to a recently published book called “Letters to Sala: A Young Woman's Life in Nazi Labor Camps,” and the research of Joshua Franklin '06. Franklin's study looks at how and why German-Jewish refugees were a distinctive group in the American Armed Forces during World War II.

Harris Alumni Directory
Clark University has partnered with Harris to create an alumni directory, which will be sold to the Clark alumni community. Harris will be contacting our alumni via e-mail, mail and phone to verify and update all alumni information. In addition, they will be asking alumni to buy the directory. Please be aware that if you do not want your information in this directory, then you need to call Harris at 800-286-4338. Many alumni have been nervous that the Harris communications are an e-mail scam, but it is in fact an official partnership with Clark. If you have not received any information about the directory, and you wish to update your alumni information, please call 866-770-3074. Thank you for your patience during this process.
