Actors From The London Stage to bring "The Merchant of
Venice" to Clark
Performers from Actors From The London Stage (AFTLS) will present
public performances of William Shakespeare's "The Merchant
of Venice" at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, and Saturday, Feb.
18, in Daniels Theater in Atwood Hall. Admission is free with a
Clark ID and $5 for the general public. For more information or
tickets, call 508-793-7356.
The public performances are part of a week-long residence at Clark
made possible by the Margaret W. and Richard P. Traina Endowed Fund
for Shakespeare and the Arts. The fund, established in 2004, brings
a Shakespeare performance group to campus every other year for performances,
workshops and classroom discussion. Performances of "The Merchant
of Venice" are also being funded by the Theater Program, ClarkArts
and the English Department.
Keck Foundation funding supports biology at Clark
Clark recently received $300,000 from the Science and Engineering
Grant Program of the W.M. Keck Foundation to support a comprehensive
and dynamic restructuring of Clark's undergraduate biology curriculum.
The University is moving its undergraduate biology curriculum from
a more traditional to an inquiry-based model that will bolster student
preparation for upper-division courses and successful professional
careers. The project is titled "Complementary Curricular Networks:
Tools to Enhance Undergraduate Biology Education." The grant
will help fund personnel and equipment, as well as courses designed
within the complementary curricular networks (CCN), which link themes
across the biology curriculum and integrate those themes with faculty
research. The CCN approach will offer undergraduates new and varied
pathways to scientific learning and research. A genetic analyzer,
high-speed video cameras, and specialized software are among planned
equipment purchases. Biology Department Chair Susan Foster is the
project director. Project co-directors include biology professors
Todd Livdahl, who is also the project coordinator, Deborah Robertson,
and David Hibbett.
McGadney named vice president for University Advancement
C. Andrew McGadney was recently named vice president for University
Advancement. He is currently director of development at Wesleyan
University in Middletown, Conn. He will officially join Clark on
March 27.
McGadney brings to Clark more than 10 years of development and management
experience. He joined Wesleyan in 1994 as assistant director of
the annual fund and has held a series of increasingly senior positions
there. As director of development, McGadney is responsible for all
areas of fund development and post-campaign planning, while managing
a development team of 17.
As Clark's vice president for University Advancement, McGadney will
lead the University's advancement efforts and manage 40 staff members
in University Advancement, the Alumni Affairs Office, the Clark
Fund and the Public Affairs Office.
"Those of us who met Andy during the search were impressed
by his vision, his broad understanding of the issues in his field,
his energy and his personality," says President John Bassett.
Ford Foundation selects Clark for $100,000 grant
After a national competition in undergraduate education that drew
more than 675 proposals, the Ford Foundation has selected Clark
as one of 26 higher education institutions to receive $100,000 grants
for projects that promote academic freedom and constructive dialogue
on campus. Clark's new Difficult Dialogues program and the Ford
Foundation grant are featured in the winter issue of Clarknews.

the University. Second, they are challenging other alumni communities

with admissions, staying connected with Clark and providing much
needed financial resources that benefit current students."

Alumni interview initiative-364 and counting
Thanks to alumni volunteers throughout the country, the alumni interview
initiative is only 364 assignments away from meeting its goal of
matching 1,300 applicants with alumni interviewers. These alumni
interviews allow students to get a closer look at Clark from someone
who lived the Clark experience, and allow counselors to receive
an objective assessment of applicants. Alumni and Parent Admissions
Program (APAP) Director Judy Earls extends her thanks to the alumni
volunteers who represent Clark in such a meaningful way. The APAP
team is confident that the goal will be met.
If you are part of this effort, please complete and return your
interview reports to Earls, jearls@clarku.edu, by Feb. 20.
The following is the latest update on the initiative as of Feburary 6, compared
to 2005.
Number of interviews offered: 1,591 (1,171 in 2005)
Number of assignments completed: 936 (977 in 2005)
Number of interviews conducted: 723 (665 in 2005)

Could you be a GOLD alumnus/a?
Clark has a recent-graduate giving program for alumni who graduated
within the last decade. The GOLD (Graduates Of the Last Decade)
Program sets annual giving levels for alumni according to their
graduation year. If you give at the recommended levels for your
class each year, you'll become a member of the Jonas Clark Fellows,
Clark's leadership group of annual donors, 10 years after you graduated
from the University.
Between June 1, 2004, and May 31, 2005--the GOLD Program's first
year--138 alumni joined the program giving at their respective class
level. This year, we hope to double that number.
For more information about the GOLD Program and to see the giving
levels, visit www.clarku.edu/gold.
