Clarkies respond to tsunami disaster
In a recent letter to the Clark community, President John Bassett outlined the efforts of several faculty, students and alumni who have been involved with relief efforts in South Asia following the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami. Although Clark students, faculty and alumni were in the region at the time of the tsunami, Bassett said, it appears that no members of the Clark community were personally harmed. He also provided information about how to contribute to organizations involved in the relief efforts. Read Bassett's letter on the Web.

Brown receives NSF grant
Halina Brown, a professor in environmental science and policy at Clark, recently received a two-year grant from the National Science Foundation totaling approximately $320,000 to study the "Emergence of an Institution for Sustainable Development: Cross Country Comparison of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)." GRI, a standardized system of voluntary reporting of environmental sustainability performance by companies, is increasingly used around the globe. The objective of Brown's research is to discover the mechanisms by which the practice of GRI reporting becomes a societal institution. Brown will examine and compare this process in two countries with different environmental regulatory styles: the United States and the Netherlands.

Seth Novatt '77: "For reasons difficult to articulate, I have always felt a deep connection to Clark. My first visit took place on a rainy winter day that didn't cast the University or its surroundings in their best light. Yet, despite having just completed visits to schools in the bucolic Berkshires, I left that day absolutely convinced that Clark was the right place for me." Read more.
Jackalyne Pfannenstiel '69: "Clark was a very special place for me and I would like to help keep it special for future students. Recently, a Clarkie friend observed that many of us had blown through four-year periods in our lives barely noticing them, and yet the four years at Clark stamped us permanently. Why?"
Larry Roshfeld '80: "It is hard to describe what makes Clark unique. Yes, Clark is a small university, with a talented, diverse student body, and an outstanding faculty that balances teaching and research. Yet ,Clark is not simply the students or the campus, the faculty or their research. What makes Clark unique is an atmosphere that blends individuality and social values, and that encourages commitment and intellectual curiosity."
