It's time to go back to the future! Ten years ago a number of students filled a time capsule with memorable items to be resurrected at your 10-year reunion. Unfortunately, no one can remember where the time capsule was buried. We need your help. If you have any idea where the time capsule is located, or if you know who the person was who collected the items, please contact Kimberly Ducharme at 508.421.3716 or kducharme@clarku.edu

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation opens national graduate scholarship competition

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is now accepting nominations for its Graduate Scholarship Program, one of the largest and most competitive scholarship programs in the country. College seniors at more than 2,000 accredited institutions in America as well as alumni who have graduated from those institutions since spring 2003 may compete for the scholarships, which can total as much as $300,000 (up to $50,000 per year for up to six years).

The foundation will award the graduate scholarships in early summer 2008 for use during the 2008-2009 academic year and will renew each award in subsequent years based on performance. Last year, the foundation awarded 34 of these scholarships. A panel of national experts will assist the foundation in selecting scholars. Scholarship candidates must be nominated by the faculty representative at their undergraduate institution. The list of faculty representatives and application materials are available here or call 1-800-498-6478.

Chemistry professor David Thurlow is Clark's faculty representative; he can be reached at dthurlow@clarku.edu. The campus deadline is March 1, 2008.

100th anniversary of the first American Nobel Laureate in the Sciences

In Stockholm on Dec. 12, 1907, Albert A. Michelson accepted the Nobel Prize in physics. He was the first American to win the Nobel in a science, being cited for his precision optical experiments, which were crucial in accurately measuring the speed of light, among other applications.

Michelson was professor of physics and director of the Physical Laboratories at Clark from 1889 (the University's opening) until 1892. At Clark, he worked on the design and testing of the interferometer, a device measuring the standard meter. Two of Michelson's interferometers reside in the library's Archives and Special Collections section, which is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

"Michelson's part in Clark's history and beyond is truly fascinating," said Mott Linn, coordinator of Archives and Special Collections. "He was one of the University's many great early scientists."

Clark celebrated this milestone on April 26 with a President's lecture by Nobel physicist Frank Wilczek. Watch Wilczek's lecture online.

Clark students attend national summit to push for climate action

Forty-eight Clark students recently joined thousands of other college students at our nation's capital to pressure Congress to take action against climate change. Power Shift 2007, held on Nov. 2-5 in Washington, D.C., is the first national youth summit to address the issues and challenges of global warming. The conference was designed to bring together leaders of different colleges and universities to share ideas and learn the skills and strategies it takes to confront current and future environmental conflicts.

Representing more than 500 colleges, students spent the weekend attending issue briefings, workshops and speaker panels focusing on the challenges and cross-sectoral issues associated with climate change. Highlights included workshops on organizing college campuses and nonviolent direct action, discussions on topics such as "Adapting to a New Climate," and a visionary speech by environmental activist and social justice leader Van Jones.

The weekend culminated with hundreds of Power Shift 2007 attendees flooding the Capitol to testify and meet with Congress to discuss critical environmental issues. Three main arguments posed before Congress as part of a national clean-energy project include the generation of millions of "green" jobs, an 80 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2050 and an end to the construction of new coal-burning energy plants.

Ashley Trull '10, who attended the summit, says Power Shift 2007 provided the energy and momentum to inspire young adults to become leaders and activists within their communities.

"The movement is finally building and becoming more of a concern for our generation," says Trull. "We're realizing that this is 'the issue' of our generation. We are the ones who are going to be feeling the effects of climate change if we don't do something about it now. We're at an important moment."
