Campus News

Undergraduates awarded Anton Fellowships
Ten Clark University undergraduates are pursuing independent scholarly research, creative projects, and community service activities this summer and during the upcoming academic year, supported by the Anton Fellowship Program. This year's recipients are: Christopher Miller '06, Sara Abrams '06, Rebecca Dezan '06, Sean Hurley '06, Michael LaFrancis '06, Gwladys Ngo Tedga '06, Larissa Price '06, Adam Tomczik '06, Elizabeth Waste '07 and Evan Wilson '06.

This is the fifth year of the Anton Fellowship Program, which was created by a gift from Barbara '56 and Thomas '56 Anton to inspire and enable undergraduates to pursue original research and creative projects. The fellowships range from $500 to $2,500. Recipients also become members of the Society of Anton Fellows, which meets at special gatherings throughout the year to share their project gleanings and experiences with each other and their Clark faculty mentors. The Anton Fellowship Program is directed by Professor Sharon Krefetz.

Traina book featured in Worcester Telegram & Gazette-www.clarku.edu/alumni
President Emeritus Richard P. Traina's book, "Changing the World: Clark University's Pioneering People, 1887-2000," was recently featured in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette in a column by Al Southwick. A link to the full article is on the scrolling headlines on the alumni Web site. The book is also available for purchase online at www.clarku.edu/clarkstore. The cost is $40.

Clark seeks vice president for University Advancement
Debbie Bieri, who has served as Clark's vice president for University Advancement for the last seven years, is leaving Clark this month to become a senior vice president for Institutional Advancement at Berklee College of Music in Boston. During her tenure at Clark, Bieri led the successful Campaign 2000 to its conclusion and worked closely with President Bassett to reorganize and upgrade the University Advancement Office. A search for her successor is underway. Alumni Affairs Director and Major Gifts Officer Bill Bennett M.P.A. '97 has been appointed interim director of University Advancement. New director of Alumni Admissions
and Parent Volunteer Program

Judy Earls has been named director of Alumni Admissions and Parent Volunteer Program in the Admissions Office. She succeeds Tricia Uber, who is taking on other roles in the Admissions Office. Earls is no stranger to Clark, having worked in the Admissions Office for the last nine years. She was the assistant coordinator to the Alumni Admissions Program and had been serving as senior assistant director of admissions/coordinator for transfer admissions before taking on this new role. Earls is pleased to be back working with alumni and is developing a new volunteer program focused on parents. Planning for Reunion 2006 is already underway. A special Reunion Volunteer Workshop will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, as part of CougarFest Homecoming. This is a great opportunity to learn how fun it can be to help plan a terrific Reunion weekend for your class or volunteer for a class agent and reunion gift program. Alumni in anniversary classes (years ending in one and six) will receive a Reunion Questionnaire in the mail. Please complete the questionnaire and return it to the Alumni Affairs Office, so we can update your classmates about your life after Clark. Information provided on the questionnaire may be used as a class note in Clarknews. You may also complete the questionnaire online at www.clarku.edu/reunionquestionnaire.

CougarFest Homecoming, Sept. 23-25

Held in conjunction with Family Weekend, this year's CougarFest Homecoming is a perfect way to spend time with your fellow alumni while meeting current students and their families. Weekend highlights especially for alumni include: Alumni Volunteer Workshops and Alumni Volunteer Recognition; alumni athletic games; varsity athletic games; a family picnic with carnival rides, face painting, games and more; a Class of 2005 Patio Dedication and Reception at the newly renovated Higgins University Center; intercultural events, the third-annual Pasticcio Bowl (flag football); the 25th-annual Alumni Hockey game; and the Jonas Clark Fellows dinner. Alumni rowers compete in Worcester
Aug. 9-13

Larry Kurzner '83 and Arthur Lee '57 competed in the U.S. masters National Rowing Championship on Lake Quinsigamond, Worcester, from Aug. 9-13. Kurzner is currently commodore of the Saugatuck Rowing Club (SRC) in Westport, Conn., and captained the SRC's 2004 U.S. Rowing National Championship Masters team. Lee is a member of the Atlanta Rowing Club and the Lake Lanier Rowing Club and competed in the single scull event.

Events held for alumni in Asia
Provost David Angel, historian Paul Ropp and Alumni Affairs Director and Major Gifts Officer Bill Bennett M.P.A. '97 recently hosted several receptions and dinners in Asia for Clark alumni, parents, friends, current students and new students coming to Clark this fall. Alumni Communities Welcome Day
Many alumni and incoming students enjoyed events held for Alumni Communities Welcome Day on July 28. Regional alumni communities in Boston, Hartford, Conn., Holden, Mass., Fitchburg, Mass., Seattle, Philadelphia, Providence, R.I., San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York held gatherings for alumni and new students in the Class of 2009 and their parents.

Boston, September 7-8:
Watch the Red Sox take on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Come to Jillian's on Lansdowne Street before each game to celebrate with your fellow alumni.

Worcester, Sept. 24:

  • The Jonas Clark Fellows Dinner will be held at Tuckerman Hall, following a reception at the Worcester Art Museum.
  • The 25th-annual Alumni Hockey Game will be played at Buffone Rink, followed by a dinner at Tilton Hall in the Higgins University Center.
  • Alumni and current students host activities, seminars and events at Clark to celebrate diversity.
  • A volunteer luncheon will be held at the Higgins University Center Wetzel Terrace to recognize all alumni volunteers.
  • Alumni will return to campus for workshops in alumni volunteer activities.

Boston, Oct. 22:
Join the Boston Regional Alumni Community to cheer on the Clark crews at the Head of the Charles regatta.

Worcester, Nov. 7-8:
2nd-Annual Alumni-in-Residence Program Alumni will be invited back to campus and asked to participate in classes and meet informally with students and student organizations.
