Campus News

Mock Trial Tournament Held at Clark

Clark hosted the New England Regional Intercollegiate Mock Trial Competition, Feb. 17-19. At least 23 teams of more than 150 students, along with approximately 60 lawyers, friends and family members, were on campus for the mock trial competitions. Visiting teams were from Boston College, Boston University, Brandeis, Harvard, George Washington, Harvard, MIT, University of New Hampshire, Tufts, Wellesley and Syracuse.

The event featured four rounds of competition, including a championship round on Sunday to decide the winning team. Panels of attorneys and judges, some of them Clark alumni who volunteered to help with the event, decided on the winners. Top teams from the region were invited to the national tournaments. Clark's Mock Trial Team, coached by Senior Trial Attorney Steven Kennedy '88, received a bid to the national tournament this year and traveled to Stetson Law School in St. Petersburgh, Fla. in March to compete. Read more about the Mock Trial at Clark in the upcoming spring issue of Clarknews.

Clark's Mock Trial teams are supported by the student Prelaw Society, the Mock Trial Team, the office of Career Services, the Dean of the College and the Government Department. To learn more, visit www.clarku.edu/prelaw

Clark Hosts National Geographic Bee

Fourth- through eighth-grade students representing more than 80 different towns and cities in Massachusetts competed in the state final of the National Geographic Bee, held at Clark on Friday, March 31. Provost David Angel gave the opening address. Dorothy Verheyen, a teacher from Quabbin Regional High School, moderated the final round.

More than 100 students who had already successfully faced school-level and qualifying competitions vied for the state championship, a $100 prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the national finals on May 23-24. The second and third place students also received cash prizes, and all three received World Globes. The national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship.

History Day Competition Comes to Campus

After competing in five regional districts, students from public and private schools across the Commonwealth will compete in the state finals of Massachusetts History Day at Clark on Saturday, April 8. The contest will take place between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Tilton Hall, Higgins University Center, and in Jonas Clark Hall. The awards ceremony to announce the winning entries will take place in Daniels Theater in Atwood Hall at approximately 3 p.m. on Saturday. Barbara Ann Tucker '57 is on the state History Day board and is responsible for bringing this event to Clark.

Students in grades 6 through 12 produced exhibits, multimedia documentaries and research papers related to this year's theme, “Taking a Stand in History.” These projects are evaluated at local, state and national competitions and are judged by teams of teachers and history professionals. The top two entries from the competition at Clark from the junior (grades 6-8) and senior (grades 9-12) divisions will compete at theNational History Day competition at the University of Maryland in June.

This is the second time Clark has hosted the Massachusetts competition for National History Day. Last year, 195 students from 41 public and private schools participated in the event.

Just Do It Day—Clark Students Do it Again

Clark's fourth-annual “Just Do It Day” was held on Saturday, April 1, from noon to 4 p.m. The day is designed to encourage Clark students to make a difference in the community. Students volunteered at the Main South Community Development Corporation, Donna Kay Rest Home, Regional Environmental Council, Broad Meadow Brook, University Park and Habitat for Humanity, among other locations. In years past, as many as 150 students participated. This year's “Just Do It Day” slogan—“Oops…Clark Did It Again”—was printed on T-shirts given out to student volunteers. A reception for all student volunteers was held at the end of the day.
