Letter to alumni

Alumni and Friends:

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the newly elected president of the Clark University Alumni Association. Personally, I am excited and honored to serve the Association and the Clark Community at large for the next two years. I have been on the Executive Board for the past three years and have worked with other Clarkies who are motivated to "give back" to Clark. Their enthusiasm and deep sense of commitment has always been a source of inspiration for me. As a Clarkie, I hope you are equally excited to participate in the process.

Many thanks to Rich Caswell ’89 for his leadership over the past two years. I have had the opportunity to work closely with Rich, and his insight and love for Clark is immeasurable. I look forward to his continued assistance as the immediate past president. Thanks also to former association presidents Faith Linsky ’76 and Elyse Darefsky ’79 for their leadership, guidance and friendship over the years.

The Alumni Association Executive Board depends on the support of countless people within the Clark community to advance the goals of the board. It could not be more appropriate at this time to thank Alumni Affairs Director Aixa Kidd, the University Advancement team, and President and Mrs. Bassett for their commitment and receptiveness to new ideas to grow and move our Alumni Association forward.

This past month, I attended Reunion 2008 and had a wonderful time. Reunion is always a great and rare opportunity to reconnect with your classmates and faculty. Wherever you are, I hope your life journey will bring you back to your alma mater, a time for reminiscence and to re-energize yourself at the birthplace of ideas, which have taken you beyond the borders of Clark.

In an effort to expand our reach, we are working vigorously to establish Alumni Regional Councils within your geographic areas. I encourage you to participate in these regional events, which are yet another opportunity to stay connected. The year unfolds with all kinds of exciting events at Clark like the establishment of the Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise and the renovation of the Robert Hutchings Goddard Library with a 21st-century Academic Commons. These changes all represent the Clark experience, which is a "hotbed" of ideas and inquiry rooted in action. In the same vein, I encourage you to get more involved with Clark and support the Clark Fund, which affords the Clark traditional mission of providing tuition assistance to all possible. I am confident that with your help and ideas we can work in a collaborative fashion to move the Alumni Association into a promising future.

Sincerely,

Roland Kyei Atupem ’82
Alumni Association President

NEWS from the Alumni and Parent Admissions program

In early June, I attended the Annapolis Institute Roundtable in Maryland. The Roundtable is a three-day, interactive, professional-development conference. Each session gives admissions professionals who work with volunteers an opportunity to share our successes and challenges with our counterparts at other institutions. It provides us the chance to discuss, brainstorm, share ideas, explore areas that promote our missions, and hear what is working for other programs. It was a dynamic and motivating experience.

The following are a few of my thoughts and impressions:

  • APAP has been blessed with the best group of alumni and parent volunteers, who love and respect Clark and represent it in the best possible light. You are dedicated, committed to following through with your assignments, and have always risen to meet the ambitious agendas we set.
  • APAP is fortunate to have the support of the administration starting at the top with our Board of Trustees. APAP is a priority for the University and Clark’s board and senior leadership has supported fully the efforts of APAP. I was proud to share that those charged with the stewardship of the University do more than pay lip service to our program. They truly value it!
  • Because of their support and your involvement, APAP has been able to strengthen and expand its existing programs and add new programs. Many of the programs we have up and running are programs other institutions are looking to establish. Our college fair, alumni interview initiative, and high-school liaison programs are very strong.
  • APAP activity has reached a new level in the last three years. With your continued support we can broaden our reach and expand the scope of our programs.

The roundtable discussions generated more than a handful of ideas that we can use to enhance the effectiveness of our existing programs. In addition to keeping these programs operating at an optimal level, we hope to improve our Web site, expand the ways in which we use technology, and expand our parent program, as well as the work we do internationally. On behalf of the APAP team, I want to thank you for your extraordinary work representing Clark University. We look forward to working with you as we begin our most ambitious year ever. Have a wonderful and safe summer!

Warm Regards,

Judy Earls
Director, Alumni and Parent Admissions Program
